English Language is a qualifying paper designed to assess a candidate’s basic proficiency in English. It carries 300 marks, but the marks obtained in this paper do not contribute to the final merit list. Candidates must secure at least 25% (75 marks) to qualify. This paper evaluates reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills, ensuring that aspirants possess the necessary language proficiency to effectively communicate in English, which is essential for government service.
The paper includes five main sections: Comprehension, where candidates answer questions based on a given passage; Precis Writing, which tests the ability to summarize a passage concisely; Grammar and Vocabulary, assessing sentence formation, usage, and word meanings; Short Essay Writing, requiring well-structured, coherent writing on a given topic; and Translation, where candidates must translate a passage from English to an Indian language. These sections collectively evaluate a candidate’s ability to understand, analyze, and express ideas effectively in English.
Despite being a qualifying paper, failing to meet the minimum 75-mark requirement results in disqualification, regardless of performance in other subjects. Therefore, candidates must not overlook this paper, especially those from non-English-medium backgrounds. Regular practice in reading newspapers, writing essays, and solving previous years’ question papers can significantly enhance proficiency. A strong grasp of English not only helps in clearing this paper but also benefits aspirants in essay writing, interviews, and overall communication skills during their civil service careers.
